Irkutsk State Medical University is one of the oldest medical university of Russia. It is a state educational institution of Higher Professional Education. It was established in the year 1919 as a medical department of Physics and Mathematics Faculty of Irkutsk State University. In the subsequent year, medical department became a separate Medical Faculty of Irkutsk State University. In the year 1930, it has become independent institution as Irkutsk State Medical Institute. Afterwards in the year 1995, the institute has received the status of university.

 Irkutsk State Medical University is one of the leading medical universities in Russia and CIS countries for studying MBBS in Russia and is highly recommendable for the students who want to study in Russia. The university provides high quality education to their students. From its existence, it has trained well qualified more than 11000 students. It has trained specialist not only from Russia but also from various other countries of the world. It has produced more than 500 doctors to 25 countries of the Middle East, Africa, Europe and Latin America.

Irkutsk State Medical University has been awarded the 4th highest level of accreditation by the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation. It is also recognized by the Federal Education and Science Supervision Agency. At present, the university managed to give training in 63 departments. The teaching staff of the university holds higher degrees and are well-experienced which includes doctors and candidates of science.


The university has in total 6 faculties out of which faculty of medicine is one of the oldest faculty. This faculty comprises of 20 departments in which 35 professors, 39 assistant professors and 200 assistant and lecturers are working. The faculty provides full time as well as part time study to the students. After the successful completion of the General Medicine program, the graduates will be given the degree of Doctor of Medicine. The program of MBBS is of 6 years for full time students and 7 years for part time students.

In addition to this, graduates who want to obtain a specialist certificate has to take internships or clinical residency studies. On the other hand, the graduates who want to enter in a PhD program has to take scientific activities of a clinical course.

This faculty trained the students who can apply their skills in any medical line. Apart from this, the university also trained General Practitioner which is also known as family doctor. Graduates of Irkutsk State Medical University have the opportunity to work as managers of medical and organisational in medical units. At present, there is high demand of medical personnel not only in medical establishments of Irkutsk but also far beyond the city.

Besides this, General Medicine program is conducted according to the federal state educational standards. During the period of studying, students of Irkutsk State Medical University has the opportunity to take up the scientific research work at the Scientific Foundation of Young Scientists and Students in any specialty.

Some of the graduates of Irkutsk State Medical University are well known personalities of Russia. Professor Grigoriev. E.G., the head of the hospital surgery department and also manage Institute of Reconstructive and Restorative Surgery in Russia, is one of the graduates of the university. It is considered as one of the best medical university for pursuing MBBS in Russia.


The university also has the well organized sports complex for the students to spend their leisure time along with the recreation camp. There are various types of activities organized by the university for the students like wit and humor competitions, vocal and music contests, beauty contests, and other enormous activities. The university also arranged international activities in which students not only learn foreign languages but also participate in various internship programs in France, Germany, India, China, Mongolia and Korea.


For admission in medical related courses, students must have studied the following subject with other subjects at school:

  • Biology
  • Chemistry
  • Physics

Students must qualify NEET (National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test) Exam to practice in India.
