The Government Medical College and Hospital, Chandigarh (GMCH.GOV.IN) oversees the counselling for Medical & Dental admissions in the region. Admission to 85% of the government medical seats is determined by the scores from the NEET UG Examination administered by the National Testing Agency (NTA). The counselling is conducted in three rounds: Round 1, Round 2, and a Mop-up round. All counselling sessions are held offline. The candidate must have completed age of 17 years at the time of admission or will complete the age on or before 31st December of the year of admission i.e. the year of his/her admission to the 1st year M.B.B.S.

Upper age limit: As per Letter No. U-11022/2/2022-UGMEB, dated 09 March 2022
received from National Medical Commission (NMC), Under Graduate Medical
Education Board (UGMEB) regarding the upper age limit, there is no upper age limit. 

All the seats are allotted through State Counseling body BFUHS (Baba Farid University of Health & Sciences) and for All India Quota Seat Via MCC as per the merit secured in UNDER GRADUATE – NATIONAL ELIGIBILITY CUM ENTRANCE TEST (UG-NEET).

Non-Resident Indians (NRIs), Overseas Citizens of India (OCI), and Foreign Nationals are eligible for admission in Medical /Dental Colleges, subject to rules and regulations framed by the respective State Governments, Institutions, and the Government of India, as the case may be. The NRI and OCI Applicants/Candidates have to upload a Certificate from the concerned Indian Diplomatic Mission in the country of their residence in support of their claim as an NRI/OCI Candidate, along with their online Application Form for NEET (UG) - 2023 and retain the original of such document for producing it at the time of Counselling / Admission to the Courses covered under NEET (UG). Similarly, a foreign applicant for NEET (UG) 2023 shall also upload Documentary Proof (e.g., relevant pages of a valid passport or a Certificate from the Competent Authority in the country of his/her nationality regarding his/her citizenship status) in support of his/her Nationality, along with the online Application Form. The formats of the Embassy Certificate, Citizenship Certificate, or any Documentary proof of Citizenship are given in Appendix XVII A and XVII B. Foreign nationals may confirm their eligibility from the concerned Medical/Dental College/State.

To get an MBBS seat in Chandigarh (specifically at GMCH-32, the city's premier government institute), eligibility is divided into three main categories: General/State Quota, All India Quota, and Foreign Indian/NRI Students.

1. Basic Eligibility (For All Students)

  • Age: Minimum 17 years by December 31, 2026.
  • Exam: Mandatory qualification in NEET-UG 2026.
  • Academic: 10+2 (PCB + English) with minimum marks in PCB aggregate:
    - General: 50%
    - SC/ST/OBC: 40%
    - PwD: 45%

2. Chandigarh UT Pool (85% State Quota)

Admission to the 85% UT Pool is highly competitive and requires candidates to fall into one of the following "Strata":

  • Strata 1 (Schooling): Candidates who completed Class 10, 11, and 12 from schools recognized by the Chandigarh Administration and located within UT Chandigarh.
  • Strata 2 (Parental Residency): Parents must have been residents of Chandigarh for at least 5 years preceding the NEET application.
  • Strata 3 (Employment): Wards of Central/State Govt. employees on deputation to Chandigarh or working in bodies where the Chandigarh Administration holds a 20%+ stake (minimum 3 years residence).
  • Strata 4 (Defense): Wards of defense personnel whose permanent home address in service records is Chandigarh.

3. Foreign Indian Students (NRI/OCI)

GMCH-32 reserves approximately 6% of seats (9 seats) specifically for Foreign Indian Students.

Who is eligible?
-
Non-Resident Indians (NRI) or their children.
- Overseas Citizens of India (OCI) or Persons of Indian Origin (PIO).

Students who have resided in another country for at least 3 years immediately prior to the year of admission.

  • Academic Requirements:Must have 50% aggregate in PCB in their qualifying exam.
  • Equivalence Certificate: Must obtain an "Equivalence Certificate" from the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) and Punjab University, Chandigarh if the schooling was from a foreign board.
  • Selection: Based strictly on NEET-UG 2026 merit among the applicants in this category. There are no "donation" or "management" seats.

4. Required Documents for NRI Candidates

If applying under the NRI/Foreign Indian quota, you must provide:

  1. Passport/Visa of the student or parent (as applicable).
  2. Embassy Certificate confirming NRI status.
  3. Relationship Certificate (affidavit showing first-degree blood relationship with the sponsor).
